St. Rose of Lima Elementary & Middle School
Certificate of Merit Program
Let your child explore something new while developing critical research and presentation skills!
Check out our Certificate of Merit Program! Open to students in 1st-8th Grades, this wonderful program is designed to allow students to explore an area of personal interest outside their regular school work, while allowing them access to expert guidance from advisors. They also gain invaluable experience in research and presentation. And completion of this program looks great on high school applications. Best of all, there is no cost to enroll in this program!
A Certificate of Merit can be earned in several areas, including:
•Christian/Community Service/Community Awareness
•Collections
•Faith/Religion
•Family & Consumer Sciences
•History/Social Science
•Math
•Pets/Animals
•Reading/Writing
•Science
•Sports
•Technology
•Vacation
•Visual & Performing Arts
Students who participate get a Certificate of Merit shirt, which they can wear with jeans on meeting days. They also receive a certificate upon completion, and present their work at the annual Open House/Art Fair in May.
The Certificate of Merit program is completed throughout the year, so students have plenty of time to complete their work. They have the added advantage of meeting once a month with a teacher advisor. At each meeting, students present a different portion of their project to their advisor. This allows advisors to check progress and approve completed work, as well as to give guidance where needed.
Tentative checkpoints are: Oct. 11, Nov. 8, Jan. 16, Feb. 14, Mar. 15, and Apr. 11.
The October meeting is geared toward helping students establish a project plan. On other dates, students should bring in one completed portion of their project.
