3-Week Program (15 instructional days)
**ONLINE COURSES available for Grades 6-8**

St. Rose of Lima offers a 3-week summer enrichment program and day camp, affording students the opportunity to strengthen or challenge their academic skills or to explore an area of interest outside the regular curriculum.  Two morning sessions are held each day.  Parents may also choose to enroll their child in the afternoon day camp, from 11:30 am until 6:00 pm, where they are engaged in varied organized activities under careful supervision.  To accommodate workElephant+readinging parents, morning day care is available from 7:00 until 8:30 am.

Assembly — 8:30 – 8:40 am
Session 1 — 8:40 – 9:55 am
Snack/Recess — 9:55 – 10:15 am
Session 2 — 10:15 – 11:30 am
Afternoon Camp — 11:30 – 6:00 pm

SUMMER ENRICHMENT

WHAT: Have fun and stay sharp with Cooking with Science, Motor Skills, Perfect Penmanship, Spanish Basics, Consumer Math, Crafts for Christ, Math Matters, Creative Writing, Art Attack, Let’s Get Healthy, Computers/Web 2.0 Tools, Fraction Action, Tell Me a Story, and Fun Science Experiments

WHO: Grades 1 – 8

SOCCER BASICS CLINIC

WHAT: Have fun while learning the basics of soccer, including player positions, passing, dribbling, trapping, and soccer terms. This clinic will help kids gain knowledge of the game and develop confidence in playing.

WHO: Grades K – 6

WHEN: July 8-12, Noon until 1:15 p.m.

SPORTS BASICS CLINIC

WHAT: Thinking about trying out for a school sport next year? Then this class is for you! Get in condition for the upcoming season and practice the fundamentals.

WHO: Grades 5 – 8

WHEN: July 8-26, Noon until 1:15 p.m. (weekly program; new skill taught each week!)

SCHEDULE OF CLASSES

“Grades” refer to the grade level the students will beentering for the 2013-14 school year. Please choose a class from each session. We will make every attempt to place your child in their first class choice. Classes may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Class changes MUST be made before the first day of Summer school.

Session 1 – 8:40-9:55 am

“Cooking With Science” – Grades K-3

The students will learn various science concepts and for each science concept there will be a cooking activity to accompany it. The students not only learn science, but valuable life skills such as cooking and math.

“Creative Writing” – Grades 3-5

During the 3 week session students will be able to practice: Thinking Maps; Writing an introduction to
hook the reader; Story sequence through the creation of a comic strip; Student checklists for story writing; Writing poetry; Peer proofreading; Computer keyboarding; Using computer programs such as StoryStarters at Scholastic.com and ReadWriteThink.org.

“Motor Skills” – Grades K-3skipping-lg

Skipping, hopping and balancing! Learn the fundamentals of sports and practice your gross motor skills.

“Perfect Penmanship” – Grades K-3

During the 3 week session, the students will learn to formulate their letters properly in manuscript (printing) and cursive (grade 3), practice proper techniques and printing experiences paired with a bit of artistic design.

“Spanish Basics”- Grades K-4

Learn the basics of the Spanish language- colors, numbers, and basic vocabulary. Create fun projects and learn a new language.

“Consumer Math” – Grades 5-8

Balancing checkbooks, paychecks, sales at the mall – what does math have to do with it? Everything! Learn the basics of consumer math to help in everyday situations. Using a variety of sources (maps, timetables, IXL, etc.), students will be able to improve their basic math skills working with percents, decimals, addition, subtraction and conversions. Concepts such as taxes, credit, gross and net pay, interest and bank accounts will be covered. This is a great opportunity to get a head start on skills required for junior high math.

“Crafts for Christ” – Grades 3-5

We will read and reflect upon scripture of the New Testament. Then we will apply our learning in a new way…making crafts! We will use various media for our creations.

“Math Matters” – Grades K-2Ladybug-Addition-For-Kindergarten

Math is all around us! Have fun with numbers, shapes and other Math concepts. Practice your addition and subtraction skills. Learn number sense and place value.

Session 2 – 10:15-11:30 am

“Art Attack” – Grades K-8

This art class is designed for students in all ages levels and abilities to actively engage in the creative process while exploring and building confidence. The course offers instruction in various mediums allowing students to experiment. Students will understand the language of art (line, shape, color, texture, pattern and form) exploring through sketching, painting, paper mosaics, cartooning and more.

“Let’s Get Healthy” – Grades K-3

Learn how to live and make healthy eating choices. Kids will learn new fun outdoor games and also how to make healthy food choices. Not only will we play and learn, but also create healthy eating options in the classroom too.

“Computers/Web 2.0 Tools” – Grades 5-8

So what are you going to do with that iPad? Want to learn about and play with applications from the internet that are free to use and can help you make exciting and creative projects for school. This will be a fun class that will give you a jump start with the iPad technology!

“Fraction Action” – Grades 3-5

We will learn all about fractions – equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and adding fractions. We will use a hands-on approach, technology and also good old fashioned pencil and paper for daily practice.

“Creative Writing” – Grades K-2writing

During the 3 week session students will be able to practice: Thinking Maps; Writing an introduction to hook the reader; Story sequence through the creation of a comic strip; Student checklists for story writing; Writing poetry; Peer proofreading; Computer Keyboarding; Using computer programs such as StoryStarters at Scholastic.com and ReadWriteThink.org.

“Tell Me a Story” – Grades K-2Parrot-with-Read-2

Where the Wild Things Are, Caps for Sale, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs… Do you love stories? Students will practice phonics and reading comprehension skills using familiar stories and thematic units.

“Fun Science Experiments” – Grades 4-8

We will do fun, easy and exciting hands-on experiments with chemical reactions, light, electricity, gravity and more. Scientists learn about the world we live in by carrying out scientific experiments or investigations. When they work on an experiment they write down what they used, what they did and what happened. We will learn about the scientific method while having a great time.

ONLINE COURSES: GRADES 6-8
Sessions 1 & 2 – 8:30-11:30 am

Students are required to enroll in BOTH Sessions 1 & 2 (3 hours a day); and additional hours at home are required to complete the course.

Do you need to review skills taught over the last school year? Would you like to get a jump start
on next year’s skills? Online courses are available for incoming 6th through 8th graders in Math and Language Arts.

Registration forms and fees for ALL Summer programs are due by Friday, June 7, 2013.
